Google Doodle Celebrates The World's Oldest Student; Kimani Maruge of Kenya Who Started Schooling at age 84


Google decided to honor the world's oldest student, a Kenyan by the name Kimani Maruge who started school when he was 84 years. The BBC reports that Mr. Maruge started schooling when the then Kenyan president introduced free primary education to all public schools.


Mr. Maruge however later died in 2009 from cancer complications. He is said to have fought for Kenya's Independence in the 1960s. He enrolled in school in 2004 and is listed at the Guiness Book of Records as the oldest stuednt ever.
"Doodles are used to celebrate the lives of famous scientists, artists, and pioneers throughout history and Google is thrilled to feature a Kenyan whose life stood for such an important cause," says Dorothy Ooky, Google's communication Manager in East Africa.
